Beyoncé—“If I Were a Boy”
This music video has used a black and white colour palette. This colour palette has revealed an old fashion style. This music video has mentioned a narrative of music. Beyonce in this music video has represented as a police woman, therefore represented power and independence. Beyoncé is represented equally with the men in the music video, which means in the past, which is difficult for a woman to do. Therefore she hang out with men and there is no women in her surrounding. This scene matches with the lyrics of “if I was a boy”. The lyric mentions her uncomfortable and her loneliness to be the one that is always “different”. Also it has represented her feeling with joining in the society group.
A lots of hand held camera is used to represent the old fashion style and the movement of the characters. Over shoulder shots were used often also for representing the figure difference between women and men, and to express the facial expressions. The lighting of the music video is low, it represents a vibe of calm, reality, and memories, therefore again represented a time period of the early 21 century or 20 century.
Problems appears as the men surrounding Beyonce did not only treat her as a friend, but also seems her as a sexual women that they want to fall in love with. Therefore Beyoncé’s husband felt ashamed and mad about her as he thinks Beyoncé cheated on him.
At the end, there is a talking scene between Beyoncé and her lover, and the reality is represented as Beyonce and her husband‘s identity were replaced , her husband is the one who is the police and have confidence and power with. As how the husband got jealous in the middle of the video, that‘s how Beyonce felt at the end of the music video.
A message is transferred through this music video and the lyrics, “If I were a boy“ could be as “ If I have the power“, I can treat myself better.
